PHIL RANELIN & WENDELL HARRISON, ADRIAN YOUNGE, ALI SHAHEED MUHAMMAD FIRE IN DETROIT

'Fire in Detroit' is the third track to be released from Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad's collaboration with trombonist Phil Ranelin and saxophonist Wendell Harrison, following on from the track 'Genesis'. Ranelin and Henderson are the founders of Tribe Records, a small Detroit-based jazz label set up in the late 70s that focused on self-reliance and communal support, providing a platform for local jazz artists to record and release albums, allowing them to avoid corporate decision-making and interference. 'Fire in Detroit' is a song that pushes and pulls. One section sees light and airy flute sit against uplifting chords strummed on guitar, with drums and bass swaying light-heartedly. The mood changes and drums and bass slot into a tight groove, the track gaining kinetic energy and Phil Ranelin's trombone and Wendell Harrison's saxophone converse in a more serious tone, perhaps depicting the simmering cauldron of racial tension which exploded in the 1967 Detroit Riot. The end of the track sees a sonic uncoiling whereby the tension and structure that has been built begins to soften like a peach left in the sun. Check out 'Fire in Detroit' here. -Ellie Rose-Davies
